As creative beings, everything we do involves changing what already exists. Nothing stays the same, and every moment is an experiment.
Embrace these experiments.
If we gather up the same tools, materials, thoughts and surroundings as we did a month ago, six months ago, a year ago, and sit down to make again, it will still be a new experiment.
There’s no guarantee we’ll be able to create exactly as we did before, even though all the external factors seem the same.
We change constantly. We cannot stay the same.
So in fact trying to create the same work over and over is harder and more fruitless than trying something different each time.
Instead, embrace the experiments.
After all, the pleasure in creating so often comes in the unexpected – the tiny twists and fortuitous flurries we couldn’t have planned and foreseen in our work, and that open up entire new landscapes of possibility.
These can only be discovered when we embrace the experiments.
We needn’t shy away, clinging to the known, familiar path as fiercely and desperately as a chased cat clings eight feet up a tree.
Instead, keep climbing. A few branches higher we might discover the most beautiful and stimulating view we’ve known in a long time. Maybe ever.
Embrace the experiments.
